It suddenly occurred to me that Ben Stein is my role model.
Not because of anything he says or believes, necessarily—though this article is as good as I've seen on its subject—but because of this:
Ben Stein is a writer, actor, economist, and lawyer living in Beverly Hills and Malibu.
Now that is a life well lived.
If there's anything to which I personally aspire, it's the idea of being many disparate things and being really good at as many of them as possible. I don't have much interest in being the best one thing I can be—I want to be able to excel in lots of stuff, whether we're talking about writing, art, programming, music, acting, sports, and any of a lengthy list of other items that I might or might not ever have a chance to try, let alone to get good at.
Life's pretty short. And the more you accomplish, the shorter it seems.
