Day 20: Thursday, August 18, 2005
Sedro-Woolley, WA to Yreka, CA

Freddie made us breakfast today—omelettes for those who wanted them, hard-boiled eggs for me (and blackberries from his backyard). I managed to rub my right eye after using my finger to taste some Dave's Insanity Sauce, so that made for eye-streaming fun for about half an hour.

We were on the road by about 8:30. From there it was a straight shot down I-5, past Seattle and into the other Vancouver, the one on the Columbia. In Portland I found myself embarked on a futile mission to find a Chipotle for lunch; we pulled off for gas at Salem and sat in a Best Western parking lot to use their Wi-Fi, but only to find that Oregon's only Chipotles were in Portland, which we'd already passed. So on we went to lunch (also in Salem) at a DQ, then onward. I felt very sleepy and nearly dozed off a number of times—however, the truly astonishing number of cops on I-5 through Washington and Oregon helped keep me on my toes. (I particularly didn't feel like meeting any more Washington state troopers.) Stopped in Roseburg for drinks, and I found that the turret thing in the lava beds where you can look at all the volcanoes, which I'd thought was in Roseburg, apparently isn't; ah well, it's a hazy day anyway. So we continued.

At Yreka we realized we wouldn't be able to make Redding realistically, so we stopped at the Best Western and turned in for an early night (sans dinner, except for some convenience store jerky) and an early start so we can make Redwood Valley for lunch. Now for the final stretch!
